The loss of fetus within 20 weeks of pregnancy is called miscarriage or abortion or spontaneous abortion. According to the research 8-20% of pregnant women face miscarriage and 80% of miscarriage occurs within 12 weeks of pregnancy. First three months of pregnancy is crucial as there is maximum chances of miscarriage. The improper development of fetus, certain infections, hormonal imbalance, diabetes, problem in cervix or uterus and thyroid disease causes miscarriage.


According to Ayurveda garbha sraava or garbha paat is correlated to miscarriage. Idiopathicw factors, chromosomal defect, infection-maternal or fetal, anatomical abnormalities of reproductive system, hormonal imbalance, late secretory phase impregnation or age factor, physical or psychological trauma, unfavorable diet and lifestyle and aggravated vayu located in shukra causes miscarriage. This leads to vitiated apana vayu, which is responsible for causing the symptoms of miscarriage.


Causes Of Miscarriage-

 Most common causes of miscarriage are-


1) Chromosome defect -

2/3rd of the miscarriage occurs due to chromosomal abnormalities.

2) Disorder in placenta – placenta is the organ that supplies blood from the mother to the fetus. Any problem in placenta can lead to miscarriage.

3) Typhoid disorder – hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism results in infertility.

4) Hormonal imbalance – hormonal imbalance can cause PCOS which delays pregnancy.

5) Uncontrolled diabetes

6) Abnormalities in the uterus

7) Mother’s age

8) Food poisoning

9) Lifestyle habits


Symptoms Of Miscarriage


Symptoms of a miscarriage include fever, fluid and tissue discharge from vagina, bleeding, weakness, light headedness, pain in abdomen or back.


Natural Approach/Ayurvedic Treatment For Preventing Miscarriage


As per Charaka Samhita, deficiency of nutrients in the sperm and egg at the time of conception leads to miscarriage. The toxins accumulated due to poor digestion results in impaired development of reproductive tissues. This affects the growth of a child in the womb.


Ayurveda believes in restoring the digestive process in an individual for preventing miscarriage. Herbal remedies helps in strengthening and nourishing the reproductive system.


Ashoka, lodhra, shatavari, phala ghrita are few of the herbal formulation and herbs to help prevent a miscarriage.


Ashoka – it is known to prevent birth cycle. The bark is mainly used for therapeutic purpose. Strontium, calcium, potassium, silica and sodium content in it deal with female regenerative framework.

Lodhra - is a herb that has significant result in treating various gynecological disorders.


Shatavari – it is used in women with different age group and has same effect as ashoka.


Mahadhanwantaram ghrita, dadimadi ghritam, viwadi lehyam etc helps in preventing nausea, morning sickness etc.
